One of the best things to do in Vienna is hopping into their numerous cafes to have a cake and enjoy a cuppa'. One of the most popular and even said to be the quintessential Austrian cafe is Cafe Sacher located in Hotel Sacher, right next to the Opera house.
There usually is a long line to get into the cafe but we were so fortunate to get inside with a less than 5-minute wait. That is definitely not the case in summer as on my previous trip, I had to wait quite a while to get in.
Even though this is a more touristy cafe; if this is your first time to Vienna, Cafe Sacher is still a worthy stop. Why so, you may ask? Cafe Sacher serves The Original Sachertorte!
What's a sachertorte?
Sachertorte is a chocolate cake invented by Austrian Franz for Prince Wenzel von Metternich in Vienna in 1832. It is not just your regular chocolate cake as you'll find a thin layer of apricot jam, coated with dark chocolate icing on the sides and the top. It is usually served with some unsweetened whipped cream at the side. Eat the torte along with some whipped cream to enjoy a creamier chocolate taste in your mouth - a seriously decadent slice of dessert!
For those who really really like the cake, you could also bring them home! It comes in a nice little "crate-like" box and you should consume it within the next 18 days of purchase. However, I do think that you should eat as many cakes as you want in the cafe itself. I bought one several years ago home to share with my family but it really isn't the same as having the fresh ones in Sacher cafe.
Plus, besides eating sachertorte, you should spend some time enjoying the decor and great service in the cafe. You could also ready more about the history of the Cafe and Hotel, founded by Franz Sacher's son, Eduard Sacher.
Grab also a Viennese Melange, an espresso shot topped with equal parts of milk and milk foam. Cafe Sacher has its own version of the Melange, with whipped cream instead of foam. For alcohol-lovers, you can also select from a range of coffee with alcohol. If you are visiting the cafe with children, don't worry, they also have a Sacher Chocolate drink.
We also tried the Apfelstrudel (apple strudel). It was served warm with generous servings of cinnamon apple within the crust :)

All in all, it is a worthwhile visit to Cafe Sacher. Its location was also perfect - close to many attractions and on the Kärntner Straße shopping street!
