Riding a scooter in Taipei, Taiwan

Riding a scooter in Taipei, Taiwan

When you get to Taiwan, it is no surprise to see a plethora of scooters and motorbikes on the roads. Ownership of scooters and motorbikes is highly common in Taiwan and it is the mode of transport for many of the locals. With these vehicles costing around 1,500 to 2,500 USD to a used version from 300 to 1,000 USD, it is no wonder why there are so many of them on the road. Also, these small vehicles can vroom in and out of densely populated regions, getting into smaller roads and paths that cars cannot reach.

To get around the smaller towns out of Taipei's city centre, another great way is to ride a scooter! Scooter rental companies abound in Taipei, mostly close to the train stations or bus terminals. Some popular tourist areas to rent scooters are from Shilin Train Station to the Shilin waterfall, or from Tamsui to the Fisherman's Wharf.

We tried the Tamsui and Fisherman's Wharf route and had great fun scooting to-and-fro. Riding the scooter is not that difficult as you do not need to learn how to balance and starting it is essentially similar to riding an e-scooter. That being said, one must be very careful as you navigate the densely-populated roads. If you're feeling unsure, take the walking paths (but do keep a lookout for pedestrians) or go on a Motorbike Tour where you can ride and experience the bike as a passenger!
