Cafehopping in Vienna: Cafe Central Wien
Cafe Central Wien was one of the hangouts of numerous great philosophers and thinkers, poets, and leaders. Think Leo Trotsky, Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzel... It is no wonder why, the grand high ceilings and homely decor of the cafe certainly inspires its many patrons. Cafe Central, one of the oldest coffee houses in Vienna, opened in 1876 on the site of the previous Vienna stock exchange on the premise of Palais Ferstel. Its history and literary history both make it a great place to sit down for a cup of coffee.
What's even better is that most coffee houses or cafes in Vienna are also affordably priced. You can get their breakfast sets from 6.70 euros and up (till 11.30am on weekdays, 1pm on weekends), and their wide selection of coffee start from 4.90 euros. (Oh, and they do serve tea too!) That's about starbucks prices but you'll enjoy restaurant style service :)
When you enter, you'll be greeted to this huge selection of cakes, tarts, and pastries. It was really so hard to choose what to have... Especially when we visited Cafe Central right after having sachertorte and apple strudels at Cafe Sacher.
Besides these sweet treats, cafe central also serves your typical mains like hungarian goulash, soups, beef sandwiches, and sausages for those who arrive for lunch.
After perusing through their menu and marvelling at the selection of cakes, we decided to try their sachertorte and a petit four! I love their tartlets! It didn't just look beautiful but tasted great too!
Their sachertorte, hmmm... I would say that milk chocolate lovers would like the chocolate frosting here, but I personally prefer the original one at Cafe Sacher!
We also each had a cup of coffee. Cafe Melange for me and espresso for T! Each cup came with a little piece of chocolate and a glass of still water. We were fortunate to have a great seat that overlooks the rest of the cafe! :)
Take time to sip your coffee and relax here after going through the countless attractions nearby. Marvel at the amazing columns and beautiful architecture of the interior. It really does make you feel like royalty, it is no wonder those famous people adore this place!
I must say that Cafe Central is my favourite cafe in Vienna and is certainly worth a visit when visiting this wondrous Austrian city!
