How to get to Strasbourg, France?

Strasbourg is well-connected and easily accessible by various modes of transportation, making it a convenient destination for travellers. If you're coming from overseas or other parts of Europe, flying into Strasbourg Airport (SXB) is a convenient option. The airport is located about 10 kilometers southwest of the city center and offers regular flights to and from major European cities. From the airport, you can then take a taxi, shuttle bus, or the TER train to reach downtown Strasbourg in approximately 15-20 minutes.

For those travelling within Europe, the train is a popular and efficient way to get to Strasbourg. The city is a major hub in the French railway network, and Strasbourg's Gare Centrale (central train station) is one of the busiest in France. High-speed TGV trains connect Strasbourg with Paris in just under two hours, and there are direct connections to other major cities such as Lyon, Marseille, and Lille. Additionally, Strasbourg is well-connected to neighboring countries, with regular trains to cities like Basel, Zurich, and Frankfurt. For a more scenic route, regional trains offer picturesque views of the Alsace countryside.

If you prefer to rent a car to drive, Strasbourg is easily accessible via the extensive European highway network. The A35 and A4 motorways connect the city to major French and German cities, making it a convenient option for those traveling by car. Once in Strasbourg, you’ll find numerous parking options, including public parking lots and garages near the city center.

Finally, long-distance bus services provide an affordable and comfortable alternative for getting to Strasbourg. Companies like FlixBus and Eurolines operate routes from various European cities, with buses arriving at the city’s main bus terminal located near the train station. No matter your preferred mode of transportation, getting to Strasbourg is straightforward and hassle-free, allowing you to start exploring this charming city as soon as you arrive.

Getting around in Strasbourg

Now once you're in Strasbourg, the best way to get around is via its efficient public transportation system and pedestrian-friendly layout.

The city boasts an extensive tram network, one of the largest in France, with six lines that connect key areas, including the historic centre, residential neighbourhoods, and the European institutions. Buses complement the tram service, providing access to more distant locations. Strasbourg is also renowned for being a bicycle-friendly city, with numerous bike rental stations and well-marked cycling paths.

If you're there for just a couple of days, I'd really recommend staying in a hotel near the old town and then explore the charming and compact city by foot. The picturesque city centre, particularly the Grande Île, is best experienced by walking, allowing you to fully appreciate its charming streets, historic architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Join a Strasbourg walking tour if you prefer an experienced guide.

What are the things to do in Strasbourg?

1. Wander Through La Petite France

La Petite France is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting neighbourhoods in Strasbourg. In the early morning, when it is still misty and with no one around, it looks like a scene right out of a fairytale!

This UNESCO World Heritage site is characterised by its charming half-timbered houses, winding canals, and cobblestone streets. Take a leisurely stroll through the area, explore the quaint shops, and enjoy a meal at one of the many riverside cafes.

Pro Tip: Go early in the morning before all the tour groups and come or visit the La Petite France later in the afternoon.

2. Discover the Covered Bridges

The Ponts Couverts, or Covered Bridges, are a series of three bridges and four towers that once served as part of the city’s medieval fortifications. This is part of the Le Petite France area and can be covered at one go. Although the wooden roofs that once covered the bridges are long gone, the name remains. The towers and bridges offer fantastic photo opportunities and a glimpse into Strasbourg’s defensive past. Nearby, you’ll find the modern and strikingly beautiful Vauban Dam, which also served as a defensive structure.

If you have the time, stay to watch the bridges open and close whenever the boats travel through the canals!

3. Enjoy a meal at La Corde à Linge

Though it may seem really touristy at first, I must say I had a really relaxing and pleasant meal here! Just sitting in the sun outdoors, people-watching far too many people taking photographs... And the view - enjoying even a cup of coffee or tea against the amazing Le Petite France backdrop is just an insane experience!

No visit to Strasbourg is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The food here was good as well. I think I had the best escargot in France this trip and I also got to try Alsatian cuisine like Spatzle! Alsatian food is a delightful blend of French and German culinary traditions.

4. Marvel at Strasbourg Cathedral

The Strasbourg Cathedral, also known as the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and one of the tallest medieval buildings in Europe. Its intricate facade and stunning stained-glass windows are awe-inspiring. Climb the 332 steps to the cathedral’s platform for breathtaking views of Strasbourg and the surrounding countryside. Be sure to visit the astronomical clock inside, which performs a fascinating show every day.

5. Explore Palais Rohan

Adjacent to the cathedral, the Palais Rohan is a magnificent palace that houses three museums: the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Museum of Fine Arts. Each museum offers a unique glimpse into the history, art, and culture of Strasbourg and the Alsace region. The opulent rooms of the palace itself are a testament to the grandeur of French aristocracy.

Here, it really reminds me of a mini-Paris. The cathedral and the exterior of Palais Rohan looks almost like the space outside the Mona Lisa gallery. If you want a taste of Paris sans the crowd, Strasbourg is definitely your destination!

6. Cruise (or walk) Along the Ill River

One of the best ways to see Strasbourg is from the water. Take a boat tour along the Ill River and enjoy a relaxing journey through the heart of the city. You’ll pass by key landmarks, including the European Parliament, the Vauban Dam, and the picturesque districts of La Petite France and Neustadt. Many tours offer multilingual audio guides, providing insightful commentary on Strasbourg’s history and attractions.

But if you like walking like me, then you should spend the afternoon walking along the water banks! That's what I did! That allowed me to escape the hustle and bustle of the already less crowded charming European town. It was an afternoon well spent! We walked the perimeter around the old town and exited the water banks when we could no longer walked anymore. So much fun!

7. Visit the European Institutions

Strasbourg is home to several important European institutions, including the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the European Court of Human Rights. Guided tours are available for the European Parliament, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the workings of the European Union and the role Strasbourg plays in European politics. The modern architecture of these institutions contrasts beautifully with the city’s historic buildings.

8. Explore the Orangerie Park

Parc de l’Orangerie, the oldest park in Strasbourg, is a perfect spot for relaxation and recreation. This was an interesting visit! The park is located further away from the old town and it is definitely worth a visit if you have a couple more days to spend in Strasbourg. The park features beautiful gardens, a boating lake, a mini-zoo, and several playgrounds, making it an ideal destination for families. Rent a rowboat, enjoy a picnic by the lake, or visit the Josephine Pavilion, named after Empress Josephine, who is said to have planted an orange tree in the park.

9. Try Strasbourg regional specialties

No trip is complete without trying its local and regional food. In Strasbourg, you have to try its tarte flambée (flammekueche), a thin, crispy pizza-like dish topped with crème fraîche, onions, and lardons. Choucroute garnie, a hearty dish of sauerkraut served with various meats, is another must-try. Finally, pair your meal with a glass of local Alsatian wine, such as Riesling or Gewürztraminer (my favourites!).

Another food to try is French pastries! I'd really recommend Boulangerie Patisserie Durrenberger which sits in-between Strasbourg train station and the old town. This could be a good first pit stop if you're going on a day trip to Strasbourg!

10. Go shopping in Strasbourg!

While Paris is THE shopping destination in Europe, Strasbourg doesn't pale in comparison either. You have a huge Primark store, Galeries Lafayette, and Place Kléber for local souvenirs and interesting knick knacks! If you are like shopping centres, the nearby Strasbourg Centre Halles is a great option to escape the summer heat, or the winter cold!

Where to stay in Strasbourg?

Strasbourg definitely deserves a couple of days and not just a day-trip! If you're looking for a good place to base, I'll recommend the Novotel Strasbourg Centre Halles. The rooms are comfortable and it is reasonably priced. We stayed there for 2 nights and were in great walking distance to the old town, train station, and all of the attractions. For something even more affordable, the adjacent Ibis Strasbourg Centre Halles is an amazing option.

But if you do want to stay within the old town itself, Maison Rouge Strasbourg Hotel & Spa is the choice to treat yourself! This luxurious hotel, part of the Autograph Collection, is situated near the city center and offers a perfect mix of modern comfort and classic elegance. Maison Rouge features well-appointed rooms, a full-service spa, and a stylish restaurant. Its prime location provides easy access to key landmarks, shopping streets, and the picturesque canals of Petite France - definitely a choice if you want a luxurious retreat!

All in all

Strasbourg’s unique blend of French and German cultures, stunning architecture, and rich history make it a captivating destination for travellers. Whether you’re exploring the charming streets of La Petite France, marvelling at the grandeur of Strasbourg Cathedral, or savouring the delicious local cuisine, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful city. Especially if you're on a road trip in Germany, I'd really recommend visiting Strasbourg as a pit stop to have a look at French cities!

I hope this travel guide has inspired you to make Strasbourg your next holiday destination and to discover the top things to do in Strasbourg! :)
