Getting from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) to Shenzhen can kickstart an exciting journey in China. With a mix of advanced transport systems and scenic views, travellers have various options that cater to different budgets and preferences. This blog post will guide you through the best transportation methods available from HKIA to Shenzhen, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable transition as you begin your adventure.
PS: I also did a post from Hong Kong city to Shenzhen.
Overview of Transportation Options from Hong Kong to Shenzhen
When planning your route to Shenzhen from HKIA, it's crucial to know the various transportation options available. Below are some of the most popular methods you can choose from:
Sea Ferry: Enjoy stunning views of the South China Sea as you travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. Plus, you'll only need to clear immigration once when you arrive in Shenzhen.
Private Car Hire: Ideal for travellers seeking flexibility and luxury.
Airport Bus Services: An economical choice, providing a simple way to travel affordably.
Train Services: The high-speed train is perfect for those who prioritize speed and comfort.
I personally took a sea ferry from the airport to Shenzhen, but depending on your itinerary, understanding each option can help ensure you select the best way to reach your destination.
Sea Ferry
For a unique and picturesque journey, consider travelling by ferry. Also, this option means that you will only need to pass immigration once! I did this on my recent trip to Shenzhen.
After arriving in Hong Kong airport, be sure not to clear the customs. Head over to E2 in the arrival hall and there'll be a ticket counter where you can purchase your ferry ticket to numerous ports in Shenzhen. For this SkyPier Terminal method, you can also easily transfer directly to the shenzhen airport. As I only had handcarry luggage for this trip, I believe the checked luggage is also transferred to the ferry terminal if you select this method.

The ferries run from Hong Kong to several ports in Shenzhen, namely Shenzhen Fuyong and Shenzhen Shekou offering passengers beautiful views of the coastline. The trip usually takes around 60-90 minutes, depending on your route. Although it may not be the quickest option, the experience of being on the water is quite enjoyable. Ferries also dock at central locations in Shenzhen, making it easier to reach your final destination.
All other methods in this blogpost would require you to clear Hong Kong immigration before making another trip to Shenzhen and clearing immigration once again. This method then saves time and there's hardly anyone in the ferry terminal and ferry terminal immigration crossing!

Private Car Hire
For travellers looking for maximum comfort and flexibility, hiring a private car is an ideal and simplest option.
These services can be arranged in advance and will pick you up directly from the airport. It allows you to travel at your own pace and limits the hassle of transfers. The ride usually takes 30-50 minutes, depending on traffic and your specific location in Shenzhen.
While private car hire from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen tends to be more expensive, averaging HK$600-900 (around $75-115 USD), it offers a level of comfort that makes it worthwhile for families or travellers with heavy luggage.
Airport Bus Services
For budget-conscious travellers, airport bus services offer direct and affordable routes to Shenzhen.
Buses such as the E11 and B3 connect to popular destinations, including major hotels and transport hubs. The journey time is approximately 60-90 minutes, with buses running frequently every 30 minutes. Tickets are easy to purchase at airport counters or machines. Most buses provide comfortable seating and air conditioning, making it a dependable travel option.
This method is especially suited for solo travellers looking for a straightforward and cost-effective transit solution.
Train Services
Another preferred option is taking the train, known for its speed and reliability.
The Airport Express train connects to the Hong Kong city center, where you can transfer to the high-speed train heading to Shenzhen. This leg of the trip from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen takes about 14 minutes. I did this on my return from Shenzhen to Hong Kong and couldn't believe the speed. It was also really fuss-free, book the high speed train tickets here.
While the overall travel time is faster when using the train, it's important to consider the transfer between the airport express and the high-speed train, which might add to the total journey time for those with a lot of luggage or tight schedules.
Preparing for the Border Crossing
Regardless of the transportation option you choose, be prepared for the border crossing from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. Travellers must present their passports, and many international visitors require a visa for entry into Mainland China.
It's wise to check current regulations before travelling, as they can change often. Always keep your documentation handy to ensure a smooth transition.
Tips for a Seamless Journey
To help make your journey as effortless as possible, consider these tips:
Plan Ahead: Look up travel times and potential delays before you leave to reduce stress during your trip.
Currency: Carry both Hong Kong Dollars and Chinese Yuan to cover expenses during transit and upon arrival.
Communication: Though many transport staff speak basic English, downloading a translation app can help if you encounter any language barriers.
Internet Access: Make sure to get a local SIM card or access to Wi-Fi for navigation and staying in touch.
